Why we do what we do

Our company was built almost a hundred years ago on a foundation that has withstood the many tests of time. Our original family members passionately believed that one should “Let your imagination take you beyond your dreams”. Through the decades that have since passed, our employees have become the guardians of this and other values held dear at the onset of our business. They endure and thrive because they are at the heart of everything we do.

Barrette Outdoor Living, creates some of the highest quality fencing, railing and exterior products available on the market, but there is far more to who we are than that. We remain a family-owned, private business and want our approximately 1,900 employees to be safe, happy and achieve whatever they can in life and with their careers. Though our employees are located in many states, with many different regional cultures, our values remain constant. We truly are a family business, and, just like a family…WE CARE. Barrette realized long ago that the single most essential investment we could make in support of our goals is in our employees – specifically their personal and professional development. This is an ongoing investment and one that we continue to reap the rewards from, as do all of our employees. We care about what we do, how we do it and who we do it with and we align our values to meet the needs of our customers. We strive to enhance their lives through the products and services we provide.

How we do what we do

We realize that in order to thrive we need to be flexible. We need our people, our processes and our equipment to be adaptable and to welcome the constant change that will keep us at the forefront of the dynamic markets that we operate within. We have a proven track record of innovation, and as a result, at Barrette you will find state of the art manufacturing equipment (much of it proprietary) and continuous production and distribution process improvement. You will find teams within all business functions who strive for increased efficiencies, improved effectiveness and a willingness to learn from mistakes as envelopes are pushed. We design our own products and we manage their development and introduction within our markets.

We design most of our equipment ourselves to reach higher levels of efficiency. We partner closely with our customers with whom we view as partners and an extension of our family. We want to “wow” them with our service while having fun doing it.

We have innovative Health and Wellness programs supported by many resources and providers – entirely for the benefit of our family and their families. We work hard to encourage our employees to be healthy and happy.

What we do

We manufacture and distribute fence, railing and associated complementary products from a variety of materials through multiple sites and sell to a variety of customers among many channels.

Barrette Outdoor living is a subsidiary of ‘Les enterprises Barrette’, who employs over 3000 in over 20 different locations in North America.


400 miles north of Montreal, Roméo Barrette – a village beekeeper turned mayor and general store owner – begins buying wood and cutting it down for sale to paper mills. The Barrette company is officially formed and continues throughout the coming years to incorporate Canadian business ventures within the lumber and sawmill industries into the Barrette family.



Barrette Outdoor Living (BOL) is established in North America. BOL enters the retail market with entry into the fencing department at the grand opening of a new chain of retail stores called The Home Depot®. BOL remains a part of the retail world to present day with the Veranda® line of aluminum, vinyl and wood fence products sold exclusively at The Home Depot.



Barrette Outdoor Living begins a partnership with Lowe’s®. To this day, BOL remains a part of the home improvement retail industry with the Freedom® line of aluminum, vinyl and wood fence, rail and lawn and garden products sold nationally at Lowe’s home improvement centers.




Barrette Outdoor Living acquires U.S. Fence, a sales, marketing and customer service company in Cleveland, Ohio. BOL also purchases Erwin Industries, a vinyl fence and wood railing manufacturing company operating in Bulls Gap, Tennessee. Both are integrated into the BOL family.


Barrette Outdoor Living acquires Plastic Research Company (PRC) a manufacturing plant that produces molded lattice, trellises, and arbors in Flint, Michigan. That same year, the BOL Field Team is built up in Cleveland, Ohio.


Barrette Outdoor Living begins a large transformation of its facility located in Bulls Gap, Tennessee. The intensive work doubles the production capacity of the plant.


The ActiveYards® brand is introduced. Decorative aluminum and vinyl fencing products for protection, privacy and pool areas, sold nationally at select ActiveYards dealers and contractors.

Barrette buys the vinyl shed division of Royal Industries, as well as acquiring Crane Fencing, adding a pro vinyl fence customer base as well as a retail vinyl fence business, expanding the Barrette Outdoor Living division.


The Xpanse® brand is developed. Sold nationally to professional dealers, lumberyards, manufacturers and specialty retailers. The Xpanse product line includes vinyl and aluminum railing and fencing systems.


Barrette acquires Satellite Manufacturing, a manufacturer of high-quality aluminum products including fencing and railing.


Barrette acquires Railing Dynamics Inc.® (RDI), located in Egg Harbor Township, New Jersey, a manufacturer of quality, dependable iron, metal and deck railing products.


BOL acquires Florida-based Alumi-Guard.® Located in a state-of-the-art manufacturing facility in Brooksville, Florida, Alumi-Guard, an innovator in quality and design, manufactures aluminum fence and rail industry products.

In late 2014, BOL launched the Boerboel® gate solutions hardware product line, offering a wide selection of hinges, latches, drop rods, handles and accessories.


BOL purchases 100,000 square feet of indoor and outdoor storage space in Riverside, California. The new facility will serve as a regional distribution center for West Coast customers.

The Longevity brand was added to the Barrette Outdoor Living family in late 2015.



BOL opened a 400,000 square foot manufacturing and distribution center located in Galloway, NJ. The new state-of-the-art facility is home to Barrette’s aluminum and vinyl fence and rail manufacturing operations, as well as the Mid-Atlantic distribution center.
